*Titolo:* Symmetries in physics

*Abstract:* The aim of this seminar is to describe some applications of
symmetries to study the properties of physical systems they act on, and
viceversa map the geometrical structures of the algebras and groups
which describe the symmetries by means of their representations on the
models. Indeed, symmetries are a powerful and versatile approach for the
analysis of physical models in a fruitful interplay between various
areas of physics, (such as gauge fields, supergravity, particle physics,
statistical mechanics, condensed matter) and mathematics (algebraic
geometry, cohomology, topology, dynamical systems). Some examples I have
focused on are using techniques in noncommutative geometry for the
quantization of space-time in high-energy physics; mapping the geometry
of exceptional Lie groups to determine the global properties of the
group manifold (generalization of Euler angles)  lattice gauge theories
and instantons in plasma physics; applications of a holographic map to
compute non-trivial topological properties of electrons in graphene like
2-dimensional materials in condensed matter physics from a gravity
theory in one dimension higher.
