AULA RICCIARDI - DIPARTIMENTO DICAR
*Physics of the complex interface dynamics in drop-laden turbulence*
*Prof. ALFREDO SOLDATI*
*TU WIEN, Università di Udine*
Have you ever wondered how tiny droplets in the air or bubbles in water
influence major environmental and industrial processes?
These microscopic interfaces—thin layers that separate liquids and
gases—are small in size but huge in impact. They act as gateways for the
transfer of momentum, heat, and gases, playing a key role in everything
from climate science to engineering applications. One of the most striking
examples is the exchange of CO₂ between the ocean and the atmosphere. This
process, which happens daily, is heavily influenced by the behavior of
bubbles and droplets in turbulent flows.
The size of these bubbles, the way they interact with the surrounding
fluid, and the properties of their surfaces all determine how much gas is
absorbed or released.
In this talk, Prof. Alfredo Soldati (TU Wien) will take us on a journey
through the history and science of tracking interfaces in turbulent flows.
He will introduce the latest mathematical models and computational
techniques used to study how bubbles and drops evolve, particularly
focusing on the phase-field method, which helps simulate how these
interfaces move and interact over time.
Beyond theory, Prof. Soldati will also showcase cutting-edge 3D
experimental imaging techniques, which allow researchers to observe and
analyze complex flow patterns with unprecedented detail. We will explore
different flow conditions where surface tension, density, and viscosity
change, revealing how these factors affect the behavior of bubbles and
droplets. A special focus will be given to the role of surfactants
(substances that modify surface properties, such as soap in water) and how
they influence turbulence, heat transfer, and the movement of dissolved
gases between different fluid phases.
*This lecture promises to be a fascinating exploration of how small-scale
fluid dynamics shape large-scale environmental and industrial processes,
making it relevant to scientists, engineers, and anyone curious about the
hidden mechanics of the world around us.*
