We're pleased to invite you to our upcoming *METaL **Seminar **- Mathematics
& Engineering Talks And Lectures -* hosted by the SIAM Student Chapter of
Pavia in collaboration with the Compmech group at DICAr.

Here are the details of the Seminar*:*

   - *Speaker*: Marco Viceconti - Professor at University of Bologna.


   - *Title*:* The role of mathematics in "in silico" medicine.*


   - *Where and when*: March 25th, *11:30-12:30*, Sala conferenze,
   IMATI-CNR, University of Pavia.


   - *Abstract: * In this seminar, we will introduce the concept of in
   silico medicine, defined as the use of subject-specific computer modelling
   and simulation for clinical decision support or to reduce, refine, and
   replace preclinical and clinical experimentation in the assessment of new
   medical interventions. We will show, using four concrete examples from the
   speaker's research, how applied mathematicians play an essential role in
   this revolution in medical practice. We will report on pioneering work done
   in the 90s with the Department of Mathematics at UNIBO; on the development
   of scalable finite element analysis of bone tissue mechanobiology with
   mathematicians at ETH Zurich; on the development of Stochastic modelling of
   sub-optimal neuromuscular control with mathematicians from Case Western
   University in Cleveland; and a recent exploration on whether the computer
   modelling of suboptimal control is quantum-computable. Last, we will
   present an open problem that poses the issue of excessive computational
   cost, the simulation of large-scale In Silico Trials of fragility hip
   fractures.
