Dear all,
We're pleased to invite you to our upcoming *METaL **Seminar **- Mathematics
& Engineering Talks And Lectures -* hosted by the SIAM Student Chapter of
Pavia in collaboration with the Compmech group at DICAr.
Here are the details of the Seminar*:*
- *Speaker*: Diego Ravazzolo - Researcher at University of Pavia.
- *Title*:* Large wood transport in rivers integrating field observation
and numerical modeling.*
- *Where and when*: May 29th, *11:00-12:00*, Sala Conferenze, IMATI-CNR,
University of Pavia.
- *Abstract: *Large wood stored within river channels plays an important
role in fluvial systems, contributing to habitat diversity, sediment
dynamics, and channel morphology. However, during flood events, the same
material can become a source of hazard, clogging bridges and hydraulic
structures and increasing flood risk. Understanding and predicting the
transport of large wood is therefore important, yet particularly
challenging due to the complex interplay between hydrodynamics, river
morphology, and large wood characteristics.
The seminar introduces the dual role of large wood in rivers,
highlighting both its ecological benefits and its potential risks during
high-flow events. The processes governing its transport are presented based
on field observations obtained through RFID and GPS tracking techniques,
which provide direct insight into entrainment, trajectories, and
deposition. Building on these observations, a numerical model is presented
that couples the finite volume solution of the Shallow Water Equations with
the transport of individual large wood elements. The resulting
Eulerian-Lagrangian model considers large wood as rigid bodies that move
and rotate according to hydrodynamic forces, interactions with other solid
bodies (wood pieces, piers, boulders, vegetation) and with the fixed
riverbed.
Finally, the seminar discusses how field data and numerical models
complement each other: observations are essential for model calibration and
validation, while models provide a tool to interpret processes and explore
scenarios that cannot be directly observed. Current limitations and open
challenges in understanding large wood dynamics in natural river systems
are also addressed.
We look forward to your participation!
