Care colleghe, cari colleghi,

di comune accordo con il nostro direttore (che ringrazio) e con il suo
beneplacito, mi permetto di disturbarvi per sottoporre alla vostra
attenzione una situazione di difficoltà che si trovano ad affrontare i
colleghi umanisti dell'Università di Aberdeen, per i dettagli della quale
vi rimando a un'email del collega Robert Frost riprodotta parzialmente in
calce a questo messaggio. Per quanto mi riguarda, ho firmato la petizione
in questione, e credo che la cosa potrebbe forse interessare anche altri
fra noi. Aggiungo soltanto che, oltre a essere uno storico molto noto e
stimato, Robert è persona serissima, come ho avuto modo di constatare
ripetutamente in prima persona. Vi ringrazio sin d'ora sentitamente per
l'attenzione, qualunque sia la vostra decisione in proposito.

Greetings from Munich where we have spent the festive season. Firstly, many
apologies for such a late reply. The period before Christmas was
unexpectedly busy, as Aberdeen’s University managers sprang a surprise in
late October by announcing their scandalous plan to close modern languages
and literature teaching at the University, and to dismiss 28 members of
staff, some of them highly respected international scholars. My wife is on
Senate, and much time was taken up with a determined fight against a plan
that by implication threatens all the Humanities. We had some success, and
after an emergency meeting of Senate, at the crucial Court meeting in mid
December they had to retreat a little, although the battle resumes this
month. The outrage expressed outside the University caught them off guard,
not least a petition that has now gathered over 15,000 signatures, which I
hope you might consider signing and sending the link round any colleagues
who might be equally outraged at this betrayal of the purposes and mission
of a University:
