*Solving problems with enriched bases and overcomplete sets*

*Résumé*
Computational problems involving PDEs and integral equations are typically
discretized using a basis, often in the form of piecewise polynomials on a
mesh. Yet, an expert practitioner may have more knowledge of features of
the solution: singularities, phases of oscillation, discontinuities,
asymptotic behaviour or mixed forms of available data. Can that knowledge
be used to enrich a discretization? How can one "add features" to a basis?
While the result may be overcomplete, and cease to be a basis, clearly a
lot of opportunities arise. In this talk we survey recent advances in this
area, covering a theory of approximation in overcomplete sets, practical
recommendations when working with "creative discretizations", efficient
algorithms to compute such approximations and a number of applications. We
end with novel ways of dealing with singularities of functions which share
seemingly universal underlying mathematics.
